General Dentistry for Canton Families
As your general dentist, Dr. Shoukfeh and his experienced team of dental assistants and dental hygienists want you to enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile for many, many years. That’s why we make sure all of our general dentistry services are of the highest quality and are completed with the most up-to-date technology and procedures. You won’t find a more dedicated, compassionate and caring dentist in Canton, and we’ll prove that from your very first visit.
In keeping with the recommendation of the American Dental Association, Dr. Shoukfeh and his team would like to see you and all of the members of your family for a dental checkup twice each year. At these dental cleanings and exams, we not only have the opportunity to thoroughly clean and polish your teeth, but we also carefully examine your entire oral cavity. We begin, of course, with a visual assessment of your teeth and gums, looking out for signs of tooth decay and gum disease. Also, we perform an oral cancer screening by palpating your neck and jaw in order to feel for any unusual formations and we search for signs of this disease, including:
- A sore that hasn’t healed
- A lump or thickening of tissue
- A smooth or scaly patch that might be either red or white
- Newly loose teeth
With early detection, oral cancer is quite treatable and usually curable.
If we find evidence of gum disease during your checkup, then Dr. Shoukfeh will recommend a course of treatment to reverse the negative effects of this bacterial disease and to halt the advance of what would otherwise be a progressively worsening condition. In the early stage, which is called gingivitis, gum disease is marked by red and swollen gum and bleeding gums. Left untreated, periodontitis may lead to receding gums, enlarged gum pockets, loose teeth and ultimately tooth loss. Beyond your mouth, the bacteria that cause gum disease have been linked to systemic ailments including hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s and diabetes. At Canton Family Smile, we’ll develop a treatment plan for you gum disease in order to restore your oral health and secure your general health.
Although Dr. Shoukfeh strives to help patients retain all of their teeth, there are some situations that demand tooth extraction. For example, if you have severely decayed, infected or damaged tooth that cannot be repaired, then extraction may be the best option. Some patients need a tooth extracted in order to prepare for orthodontic treatment. And still others need to have their wisdom teeth removed. Whatever the circumstance, Dr. Shoukfeh can remove your tooth painlessly and safely.
